Champions League, transfer window, Leicester today and match facts from the BBC

Everything comes down to the match and the Premier League is still the most important. It's maybe not the most important if by the time the FA Cup semi-finals come around we're still in it and 10th, but you know what I mean.

And it's only the third game, but the pressure has already begun. Not for us, but for other teams in the Premier League it has. Ask an Everton fan how important it is they beat Bournemouth today!

And if we lose today, there will be comments. And that's why the Premier League is still the most important. For the record, they'll be no comments from me, but you watch social media and it'll be out of control.

It's why it's so important. We might not like it, but it happens. It's the way of life and so many seem to forget where we were not so long ago. We certainly weren't playing in the Champions League.

And that's exactly where we are this season and it's a new format. It looks like quite a different tournament at this stage and I think this format gives teams like us a better chance of making it to the next stage. I might be wrong, but I think I like this new format.

And for those that didn't know, we'll be playing Bayern Munich, Juventus, Celtic and Bologna at Villa Park and the away fixtures will be against RB Leipzig, Club Brugge, Young Boys and AS Monaco.

I'm not sure how many of those we need to win, but I fancy if we could win four and draw two, that would be more than enough, but that will be tough too. It's going to be interesting to be part of it and I think we will learn the dates at some time today.

But everything is tough, but that's how it is at this level. It's about focusing on the match right in front of you and trusting that the people around you are doing the right things. And the people at Aston Villa are doing the right things.

But some might be a little disappointed in how the transfer window closed last night. It does feel like we could have done with one more player, but when I look at the squad this season, it still looks stronger than last season, when you factor in we have Mings, Kamara and Buendia to come back.

And it's not always about the number of players you bring in, it's about the players you have and while I think the manager might have liked a player or two extra, I suspect he will be happy with what he has in the knowledge that too many new players isn't always a good thing.

We're in a very good place and even though there is a lot of noise around us, it's all about Leicester today and getting the three points. I'll be back later. Now going to load up the Ticket Master site, even though I don't think I really want to go see a band 20+ years past their peak. I think it will be more interesting to watch Oasis in another 20 years in Vegas.

Match facts from the BBC

Head-to-head

  • Leicester have lost just seven of their 28 Premier League meetings with Aston Villa (W11, D10).

  • However, Villa are unbeaten in their last three matches at the King Power Stadium with their two wins in those matches twice as many as they managed in their first 11 Premier League visits.

  • Only one of their last six top-flight meetings has been won by the home side.

Leicester City

  • Steve Cooper is looking to avoid becoming the first Leicester boss since Paulo Sousa in August 2010 to fail to win any of their first three league games in charge.

  • Cooper has won just one of his last 15 Premier League matches as a manager, and none of the last eight.

  • In their most recent Premier League campaign in 2022-23, Leicester took just one point from their opening seven league fixtures.

  • The Foxes' only clean sheet in their last 25 top-flight matches was a goalless draw with Newcastle in May 2023.

  • They have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last 14 Premier League home fixtures, since a 2-0 win against Leeds in October 2022.

Aston Villa

  • Aston Villa's only victory in their last eight games in all competitions was a 2-1 victory at West Ham on the opening game of the season.

  • They have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last seven top-flight matches, conceding a total of 15 goals across those games.

  • Only Manchester City (23) and Arsenal (20) have won more Premier League away games than the 15 Villa have since Unai Emery’s first away match in charge in November 2022.

  • Emery has only lost more Premier League matches as a manager against Liverpool and Manchester City (both four) than the three he has versus Leicester.

  • Villa have won eight of their nine league matches against promoted opposition under Emery, only dropping points in a 1-1 home draw versus Sheffield United in December 2023.

  • Ollie Watkins has gone seven league games without a goal.
