Aston Villa v FC Porto: Peace Cup banter

Right, it's match time and we are as good as ready. Do you want to predict the score? This is a proper test for us tonight. Porto are no mugs but it will be great to get a result.

One minute silence in a very empty stadium and we have some team news.

Guzan, Shorey, Cuellar, Davies, Lichaj, Albrighton, Sidwell, Reo-Coker (c), Young, Heskey, Carew. Subs: Friedel, Parish, Clark, Lowry, Bannan, Herd, Weimann.

I'm looking forward to this. Beer arrives.

I've not mentioned Sir Bobby Robson today as I'm just a blogger and I can't say what is necessary, but he will be missed.

We're playing 4-4-2 with Carew and Heskey up front and Reo-Coker is the captain. If he plays like he did the other night and we see the likes of Lichaj and Albrighton play like they have, then we could win this.

I know it is pre-season, but still, it is a competitive game, how can it not be?

10 Minute Analysis

As I've got more people in my house at the moment than there is in the stadium I've heard a lot of 'away' and 'out' from the Villa players. They've basically not spent any time in the other half and while I'ma big fan of the long ball, it would be nice that instead of the just hit it long, to give the ball back to the other team, they tried to keep it and play the ball out.

Porto will calm down and we will get our chance, but watch Porto play the ball out. This is what we need to learn how to do.

14 Minute Analysis: 1-0 Villa

A few minutes ago, Ashley Young was played in down the left and his cross went straight to the keeper. Now, that isn't so bad, but when you look at the repalys there was nobody close to getting the ball he was trying to play in.

A minute ago, the new man of the moment, Marc Albrighton, picks the ball up from 25 yards, runs a few more yards and whips in a fantastic ball for Heskey to slot home. It really was a fantastic cross and it wasn't easy for Heskey either. Very good goal.

Pause for thought

I've got a really good feeling about Marc Albrighton. Could he really be this good?

20 Minute Analysis

Carew just picked up a knock, he'll try and run it off and it might not be that bad, but I've got to talk about Lichaj and Albrighton again; they really do look good together and just watching them play is getting me excited for next season. I hope they get a chance.

Curtis Davies has gone off on 21 and he is replaced by the next very good prospect Ciaran Clark. I'm looking forward to seeing more of this player.

30 Minute Analysis: 1-0 Villa

Not much has happened the past 10 minutes. Clark is on and this will be a good run out for the lad and a chance for O'Neill to see him up against some quality players. Apart from that, not much. heskey had a long shot that went high. Sidwell and Reo-Coker are looking okay and I am getting excited with Lichaj and Albrighton, but allow me that please.

37 Minute Analysis: 2-0 Villa

Steve Sidwell scores. The ball comes in from a corner, hits a Porto man and it comes to him from behind, he flips a leg over, lets it roll in front of him, shoots and scores.

say what you want about this tournament, this is a competitive match and I'm loving this team. Two work horses in the middle and everything going out wide.

Half Time: 2-0

So, had you been told this was going to be the score at half time, would you have taken it? I would have done and I'll even hold my hands up and say we've looked decent playing 4-4-2.

I'm not going to harp on about the magic two, but we do need a little more in the second half. I'm not sure what of, but Porto have had a fair chunk of possession and if they start to create chances they could score a few. Still, I fancy we will get better too. Bring it on.

55 Minute Analysis: 2-0 Villa

Porto have come out to fight in the second half and they've also brought on the baby Hulk. The real Hulk is wearing claret and blue tonight. It's fairly even, although we do look good on the ball, as do they.

65 Minute Analysis: 2-0 Villa

Read for the previous ten minutes, not much has changed, apart from from Lowry coming on for Carew.

Peace Cup: Heskey sent off and yellow cards everywhere

It was silly, Heskey raised both hands to the face of the Porto player and as such, he got sent off. Add to that the yellow cards tonight and in quite a few of the matches, it doesn't really inspire peace, which sort of is the point. Ten men should still beat Porto though.

Guzan and card break

I've seen some dodgy tackles from a couple of Porto players tonight but I don't think I've seen a yellow card for them, but I don't want to read too much into that, it is only pre-season. But I do want to mention Brad Guzan; he has had a very good game. very vocal and made a couple of good saves.

75 Minute Analysis: 2-0 Villa

Young and Albrighton off for Herd and Weimann. We might be down to ten men, but this Porto team are not liking our football and we are attacking as much as they are. Did I also hear the commentator correctly earlier that there is £2mn. for the winners of this tournament? I might be wrong, so I'll go check.

78 Minute Analysis: 2-0 Villa

Fantastic, absolutely fantastic save from Guzan. We might see more of him next season, you never know.

Full Time: 2-1 Villa

Porto got a penalty late on but we held on. A fair result and the better team won. Nice.
